Biology of Neuroglia
Biology of Neuroglia is a compilation of the invited papers presented in 1963 in Buenos Aires at the International Symposium of Neurologic Research. It attempts to coordinate interdisciplinary data relevant to neuroglia that have accrued from the application of biochemical, cytochemical, electronmicroscopic and physiologic, including microphysiologic, techniques.
The dynamic involvement of astrocytes and ependymal cells is demonstrated in the ionic and osmotic involvement of the central nervous system particularly with sodium.
Glycogen metabolism of the astroglia was found to be altered in circumstances affecting an astroglial-neuronal metabolic unit. The unresolved problem of cerebral edema was approached from several avenues by way of the neuroglia which appear to be related in multiple ways with the edematous process. The edema was a variable dependent upon pathogenesis. Synaptic events, myelination and allergic responses
